In 2008, Vitamin D made headline after headline, due to research after research touting its benefits. The important factor the research uncovered was most of us are not getting enough of it.
If you are limiting your sun exposure, it is important to include good sources of Vitamin D in your diet.
People living in colder climates, those that are homebound, use sunscreen or individuals working in an occupation that prevents exposure to sunlight are at risk of a Vitamin D deficiency.
Individuals, who have reduced ability to absorb dietary fat known as fat malabsorption, may need extra vitamin D because it is a fat-soluble vitamin.
Causes of fat malabsorption are pancreatic enzyme deficiency, Crohn's disease, cystic fibrosis, liver disease, surgical removal of part or all of the stomach, and small bowel disease.
Symptoms of fat malabsorption include diarrhea and greasy stools.
Vitamin D supplements are often recommended for breast-fed infants because human milk may not contain adequate Vitamin D.
The Institute of Medicine states: "With habitual small doses of sunshine, breast-fed or formula-fed infants do not require supplemental vitamin D."
Mothers of infants who are exclusively breastfed and have a limited sun exposure should consult with a pediatrician on this issue.
Since infant formulas are routinely fortified with Vitamin D, formula fed infants usually have adequate dietary intake of Vitamin D.

Right now, the RDA recommended daily amount - is 200 IU for children and 400 IU for adult.
However new research suggests children and adolescents now take 400 IU per day and adults should be taking 1,000 to 2,000 or more Vitamin D daily. Some doctors suggest as much as 5000 IU a day if battling an immune depleting disease such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis or aids.
As with any vitamin or supplement, please consult your doctor before taking. Author Beverly Terhune speaks from 35 years of living with Rheumatoid Arthritis and shares her experience, strength & hope on how to lead a healthy, substance-free life.
