5 Ways To Get Cultured

One must read labels to find out which foods contain live bacteria, not products in which all the bacteria has been nuked through pasteurization. For the foods that contain live bacteria and for the healthiest meals try the following five suggestions.

1. Make sure your live products are refrigerated.
Whether it's sauerkraut, pickles, miso or yogurt, if it's not refrigerated it doesn't contain live bacteria. If it is pasteurized, processed, or cooked all the bacteria are dead.

1. 2. Choose the darkest miso.
The Japanese have discovered the health benefits of miso long before we 'processed-food-eating Americans' have. Miso is really a soy sauce paste, a delicious substitute for salt or base for broth. The longer miso ferments, the darker it becomes. And the longer it ferments the more cancer-preventing isoflavones it produces.
For a healthy, delicious soup go to the health food store and purchase some miso to flavor your broth, then mix in some dried seaweeds and cubes of tofu.

3. Pick out the right pickles.
You want to choose the vinegar-free pickles, like dill, because they're made with bacteria. Pick a peck of pickles made in brine - they contain bacteria. Read the label, if it says: fresh-pack, this means they are made with vinegar. Examples of pickles made with vinegar are: bread and butter or any sweet pickles, vinegar will be listed as an ingredient.

4. Learn to love kefir and tempeh.
Kefir is a cultured milk product, it is a drinkable yogurt but it is made with a different strain of bacteria and yeast than yogurt. If a recipe calls for buttermilk - try kefir. Tempeh is a fermented soybean product. You can slice this product and brown it in a little olive oil. After cooking, treat it like mushrooms and add to soups, salads and sandwiches.

5. Take supplements that contain acidophilus and bifidus.
