Do you even need to take antioxidants? If so, which ones and in what amounts? How do antioxidants mix with prescription drugs you might be taking?
Below is a guideline to antioxidants: What they are good for, in which foods they are found, and what amounts to take.
Try Vitamin E if you have or would like to prevent, Heart Disease, Breast Cancer or have just had Gastric Bypass Surgery. *
* Dry Vitamin of 400 to 800 IU´s a day.
Vitamin E is found in naturally in almonds and whole wheat products.
Vitamin E is said to have survived a recent study attacking its safety. It turns out that there were problems with the research concerning participants of the studies. Among the participant´s that died, most had advance heart disease or Alzheimer´s and were near death to begin with.
Also the research counted death from all causes, including car accidents and suicide, so it´s hard to believe that Vitamin E could have been solely responsible. The fact is, most experts believe that high does of antioxidants are pretty innocuous, but if you are planning to take some, be sure to check with a doctor first.
Vitamin C is recommended for the prevention and treatment of heart conditions. 500 to 3,000 mg is suggested as the daily dosage. Vitamin C is found in fruits and vegetables.
Beta Carotene is very helpful for the treatment and prevention of degenerative eye conditions. 500 to 3,000 mg is the daily recommended dosage. Beta Carotene is found in carrots and other vegetables.
CoQ10 will help and prevent certain heart diseases. 50-500 mg is the daily recommended dosage. CoQ10 has also been found helpful in the treatment of breast cancer. 100-400 mg is the daily recommended dosage for the treatment of breast cancer. CoQ10 is found mainly in broccoli and organ meats.
Alpha Lipoic Acid is found primarily in broccoli and organ meats. It is very helpful in treating conditions associated with being overweight and with having diabetes. Diabetes suffers are told to take 50-300 mg per day to assist with their treatment. If you are overweight, taking 100-300 mg daily of Alpha Lipoic Acid may prove helpful.
How can I find out about any possible interactions between antioxidants and my medications?
There are a few areas of concern when you´re taking these supplements with drugs. For one thing, blood thinners such as E and Ginkgo Biloba might amplify the effects of anticoagulant drugs, such as aspirin or Coumadin. But the evidence on that is conflicting, so ask your doctor to run blood tests to see if you may need to adjust your drug dosage or quit the antioxidants.
Also, Saint John Wort, an herb with antioxidant activity that is normally taken for depression, increases the liver´s ability to break down drugs and toxins. This would seem to be a good thing in a polluted world. However, Saint John´s Wort also reduces the effectiveness of many drugs, including those for heart disease, cancer, and HIV. If you are taking any drugs regularly, it is essential that you consult a physician before taking Saint John´s Wort.

When is it appropriate to take large amounts of individual antioxidants?
When you´ve have any particular conditions that you want to treat or prevent. For example, people with diabetes seem to generate unusually large amounts of free radicals, and studies have shown Vitamins C , E and Alpha Lipoic Acid to be helpful.
CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) has been found beneficial in reversing cardiomyopathy and heart failure, diseases in which the heart muscle lacks the energy to pump blood.
If you have these health problems, work with a physician or naturopath to determine the right dosage for you.
