Happiness, potassium, sugar control,
simple PAD test, put it down. What do all these
words mean to you? Your health depends on them, see
how you benefit by taking better care of yourself,
starting today. Voltaire was quoted as saying, The
art of medicine consists in amusing the patient
while nature cures the disease.
New studies show
that people who are described as
being happy, lively and calm,
not only shrug off the minor
symptoms of a cold or flu, it
actually makes them less
susceptible to catching one in
the first place.
Sad sacks, on
the other hand, described as
anxious, hostile and
depressed, and those who tend to
complain about their cold or flu
symptoms show a higher rate of
illnesses.
Pretending to be
happy does not work, so work on
happiness from the inside out.
Try yoga, journaling, pay off
old debts, let go of grudges,
begin an exercise program and
shed some pounds.
Ever wonder if you are
eating a healthy diet? Better yet, want
a test to prove it? Ordering up a bunch
of blood work or recording each and
every tidbit of food used to be the only
way of proving you were eating a healthy
diet.
Now there may be a third way to
test how healthy you are. Canadian
researchers have found that a simple
urine test for potassium, passing
excessive amounts of that mineral in the
urine would indicate a healthy diet, and
they were right. Increased levels of
potassium correlated with healthy eating
habits, low weight and blood pressure,
and a healthy heart.
Often people eat so many
foods with high sugar content, that they
wear out the pancreas and put themselves
at risk for developing diabetes,
especially in their later years.
Start now by asking your
health care practitioner how to lower
your glucose levels. Try eliminating
these foods from your diet, potatoes,
corn, white rice, bread from refined
flour, beets, carrots, refined sugar,
corn syrup, molasses, honey, sugared
colas, and beer.
Chances are you have
never heard of peripheral arterial
disease, often called PAD, an illness
characterized by clogged arteries in the
legs and other extremities. This
potentially deadly disease affects 8
million to 12 million Americans, yet as
many as 75 percent of them experience no
symptoms.
The most common type of
peripheral vascular disease, PAD, occurs
when extra cholesterol and other fats,
called plaque, collect in the walls of
arteries. This process, left unchecked,
narrows the arteries and eventually
reduces the space needed for a healthily
blood flow to your heart.
You can have a simple
screening for PAD, an easy test that is
effective and quick, inexpensive and
painless. The test is called the
ankle-brachial index (ABI).
The ABI
measures the blood pressure of the ankle
and arm at the same time using a pencil
shaped ultrasound device called a
Doppler. By dividing the highest
blood pressure at the ankle by the
highest recorded pressure in your arm,
your healthcare practitioner arrives at
your ABI.
Healthy angle pressure
registers at least 90 percent of arm
pressure, but severe narrowing of PAD
may cause it to drop to less than 50
percent.
Additional risk factors
include diabetes, or pre diabetes, a
history of heart attack or stroke, and
ethnicity; African Americans are twice
as likely to develop PAD.
You hear this
all the time, put that
cigarette down, or do not
start smoking tin the first
place. Today we have new
research that shows that
depriving your body of
precious oxygen can cause a
myriad of health problems.
Smokers on average are diagnosed with
peripheral arterial disease
(PAD) up to 10 years earlier
than non smokers.
